The Internet in my Country

The internet is essential in Korea. Recently many young people check e-mails, do the shopping and chat, play games, and meet new friends through the internet everyday. The internet in Korea has become as important as eating, sleeping, and wearing clothes everyday. The Korean Government has tried to lead the people to the way of informationalization and Korea public opinion has supported it intensively after the 1990’s. Consequently, people who can not handle the internet freely are likely to become an outsider in the community they belong to. The following are the features the popularization of the internet results in Korea.
First, community activities on the internet have become more and more important. The internet community means volunteer groups of people who share the same hobby, religion, or job can share information through their main page on-line everyday, and make a friendship by meeting at off-line places periodically. As for me, I have enjoyed tennis and have had a tennis community for 6 years through the internet. I check the new articles on our community’s main page everyday and we play tennis every Sunday. I experienced in person that my life style changed completely after starting my tennis community on the internet. I miss them very much now because now I live in the US.
Second, the internet is making the economic paradigm change. Traditionally an economic life has meant the exchange of money and goods in person. There were some problems because this was restricted by time, space, and the labor costs. However, the internet improves all those restrictions. An internet store can cover the consumers throughout their own country and in many other parts of the world as well. We can enjoy the internet shopping at any time and place we want with low price comparatively. According to the recent statistics, it is often reported that the off-line stores lost competitive power to on-line stores who are giving up their business. In addition, the internet banking and the internet stock trading etc. are also a portion of economic life affected by the internet.
Third, the internet seems to be a more powerful, new entertainment than the TV. For example, the game room business that provides the quickest network all night throughout the year is thriving in Korea and there are always lots of game addicted people. Once they get started on a game, such as Star Craft, Rinige, they used to spend long hours or a few days playing in some serious cases they eat and sleep but don’t wash in the game room. On the other side, we frequently see the people communicating by chatting program such as MSN messenger. In my opinion, the chatting can also be a kind of addiction because once getting started, it is hard to stop.
In conclusion, these days Korea has become a leading country of the internet and it results in both merits and faults. As mentioned above, the examples are on-line community’s activation, the change of the economic paradigm, and increasing game addicted people. I think the merits surpass the faults considering from my experience. Also, I heard now it is no more than the beginning and the potential will be more powerful. Therefore, I hope Korea will become the strongest nation of the internet. Fortunately, we already have some conditions of the proper technology and knowledge.

Differences between Maine and Kansas

Novel & video class
Feb, 2, 2005

There are some differences between Maine and Kansas. Maine is located by the sea facing the Atlantic Ocean, so the people who live there base their economy on the sea, for example, food and job etc. On the contrary, Kansas is located inland, where it is in the center of the USA, so people there mainly raise cows, sheep, dogs. etc. on the farm. I think these pleople enjoy the agricultural life.

My last weekend

Alisa
Dec. 7. 2004.

My last weekend was so-so. First, I was bored because of breaking an appointment with my new American friend, and after that nothing special occured. Second, I had a lot to do, homework, extra studies, cleaning, writing some letters to my Korean friends, and so forth. But the time went quickly without having something to do. I was not productive. Third, I ate too much last week, so now I’m not comfortable. Since I have come to Carbondale, I’m getting fat in spite of having less food. So I should have been on a diet. Now I’m feeling regretful. In Conclusion, my last weekend was too ordinary.

A chorus of angels

My oldest niece's birthday was very noisy but funny. My oldest niece is Joomi. You can call her Sandy. This year, she was 9th. My older sister and I decorated the home with balloons and photos, and pictures. Also we prepared for them enough food. For example, Bulgogi, gimbob, pizza, snacks, beverages etc. She invited all of her classmates and about 30 members gathered at a home. They made noise as if every children of that ages is child-like. First, they started to eat lunch. All the food dissappeared in a instant. After lunch, my niece wore a concert dress, played the piano and the violin for her friends. The audience including friends and family applauded her performance. And then they frolicked and ran around the home. After they left, we had to spend a long time cleaning up. Although I was out of my senses, that memory remains in my mind as a happy time.

Taiwan's new year's day

In Taiwan, new year's day is a special and fun day. It falls in Jan. every year by the lunar calendar. Anny, my classmate wakes up early and wears new modern clothes and goes to her grandfather? house. Her relatives prepare a lot of delicious food, and they clean the house. They sing congratulations or happy new year? songs and eat Dumplings and fish etc. After eating, Anny plays and chats with her cousin? children. In the evening, the adults play Majok, watch TV, and play with fire works. They also give money in a red bag. A long vacation is a happy time for everyone. Anny says these days are fine because she doesn? have to go to school for a long vacation. That sounds great.

Maria Sarapova

My favorite tennis star is ‘Maria Sarapova’. First, Sarapova is a very good athlete because she can run fast and hit the ball in the corner with accuracy. Also, she is famous for making a loud voice when she is playing in a game. I think that voice contains her desire of victory. Second, she is a very beautiful and charming girl. Now she is only 18 years old although she is tall, thin, and has a charming smile. So, she has a lot of fans including men, women, young, old. Third, she is famous everywhere she goes. She makes a lot of money through commercials. For example, many companies want her to be a main commercial model for them, such as Nike and Prince. In conclusion, there are many reasons why Maria Sarapova is my favorite tennis player.
