The internet is essential in Korea. Recently many young people check e-mails, do the shopping and chat, play games, and meet new friends through the internet everyday. The internet in Korea has become as important as eating, sleeping, and wearing clothes everyday. The Korean Government has tried to lead the people to the way of informationalization and Korea public opinion has supported it intensively after the 1990’s. Consequently, people who can not handle the internet freely are likely to become an outsider in the community they belong to. The following are the features the popularization of the internet results in Korea.
First, community activities on the internet have become more and more important. The internet community means volunteer groups of people who share the same hobby, religion, or job can share information through their main page on-line everyday, and make a friendship by meeting at off-line places periodically. As for me, I have enjoyed tennis and have had a tennis community for 6 years through the internet. I check the new articles on our community’s main page everyday and we play tennis every Sunday. I experienced in person that my life style changed completely after starting my tennis community on the internet. I miss them very much now because now I live in the US.
Second, the internet is making the economic paradigm change. Traditionally an economic life has meant the exchange of money and goods in person. There were some problems because this was restricted by time, space, and the labor costs. However, the internet improves all those restrictions. An internet store can cover the consumers throughout their own country and in many other parts of the world as well. We can enjoy the internet shopping at any time and place we want with low price comparatively. According to the recent statistics, it is often reported that the off-line stores lost competitive power to on-line stores who are giving up their business. In addition, the internet banking and the internet stock trading etc. are also a portion of economic life affected by the internet.
Third, the internet seems to be a more powerful, new entertainment than the TV. For example, the game room business that provides the quickest network all night throughout the year is thriving in Korea and there are always lots of game addicted people. Once they get started on a game, such as Star Craft, Rinige, they used to spend long hours or a few days playing in some serious cases they eat and sleep but don’t wash in the game room. On the other side, we frequently see the people communicating by chatting program such as MSN messenger. In my opinion, the chatting can also be a kind of addiction because once getting started, it is hard to stop.
In conclusion, these days Korea has become a leading country of the internet and it results in both merits and faults. As mentioned above, the examples are on-line community’s activation, the change of the economic paradigm, and increasing game addicted people. I think the merits surpass the faults considering from my experience. Also, I heard now it is no more than the beginning and the potential will be more powerful. Therefore, I hope Korea will become the strongest nation of the internet. Fortunately, we already have some conditions of the proper technology and knowledge.
